"Shorter Encyclopaedia of Islam" by H.A.R. Gibb & J.H. Kramers, (1953 1st published; 1956, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1974, one991 reprints); simply 1 volume of 671 pgs, hardback, English; ISBN: 90-04-00681-8. The 1974 edition notes: "The `Shorter Encyclopadia of Islam' includes all of the articles contained within the 1st edition and Supplement of the [earlier] `Encyclopaedia of Islam' [9 vols. between 1913-1930s] that connected significantly to the faith and law of Islam. the bulk of the first articles are reproduced while not material alteration. variety of articles are shortened or revised, and some new articles are added. In most cases, extra entries are created within the bibliographies so as to bring them up thus far." Why is that this volume `short'? For its' shortened contents, let's re-read the book's preface note: "related significantly to the faith and law of Islam." thus, nothing below `J' for `Jihad'. however within the `Register of Subjects', "War" refers a reader to: Dar al-Harb, Dar al-Islam, Dar al-Sulh, Dhimma, Djihad [about 800 words], & Dijizya. relating to `djihad' the authors opined: "holy war. The unfold of Islam by arms may be a spiritual duty upon Muslims in general" (p. 89).Regarding `updated' material, it's tough to check, however I did encounter Kaba: "The [cloth covering] kiswa is ready in Egypt each year and delivered to Mecca by the pilgrim caravan." A nice huge book

This is merely an impressive book. Written and printed originally in German, well-translated (it reads as if it had been originally written in English, that indicates a decent translation), fantastically place along, well edited, with many full color images of mosaics, mosques, palaces, forts, towns, manuscripts, jewels, and mausoleums. The book claims attention. it's a full history of Islam, with maps and timelines in each chapter to assist the reader in what may well be unfamiliar territory, and a full history of the event of Art and design in fourteen centuries of Islamic culture round the globe. each page has a minimum of one photograph, and every one images are of nice quality, sharp and clear. Even the photo on page 334, one among the only a few in black and white, is good, virtually haunting, since the walls shown are in ruins. The paper is additionally top quality. From the duvet onwards it's clear that there's nice respect for the culture represented during this book, and for the reader who can undergo 600 hundred pages of text and supporting material. My personal highlights: night shot of the Kaaba, in Mecca, p. 2 and 13. Map of Europe, Asia, and most of Africa with sharp, thumbnail-like images of Muslim architectonic marvels in those 3 continents, p. 6-7. Al-Mutawakkil mosque, p. 103. What the facade of the Azhar Mosque in Cairo (p. 140) and therefore the Almoravid clay seal (p. 247) have in common, that could be a testimony to the endurance of symbols. the whole "Spain and Morocco" chapter, 207-299.
